“Laughter Yoga is Not What You Think….

It’s serious….very serious laughter! 😂

Natural laughter in daily life often does not last for more than a minute or so, so its health benefits are limited. Laughter yoga is a gentle exercise involving prolonged laughing for 10-20 minutes (or longer) with deep breathing in between. It’s a yoga in the sense that it is a practice or a discipline designed to consciously harness the benefits of laughter.

Laughter yoga is a clever hack to quickly reset the nervous system from stress to rest mode.”

This event is free and open to all ages and genders.

(Children must participate with parents)

  • Laughter yoga is one of the easiest and fun exercises to do, accessible to almost all ages, ability levels, or health conditions. If at any time you feel you are not able to participate in the exercises, you can easily skip that exercise, pause, and resume whenever you feel comfortable.

If you suffer from a serious condition, please consult with your doctor before.

  • It can potentially improve mood, blood pressure, digestion, immune response, sleep quality, stress, anxiety, and depression.

On its own, laughter yoga is not a treatment for any health condition but provides complementary benefits that support a holistic health care. For healthy people living busy lives, it can serve as an easy antidote to the daily stressors of life. For our fit-and-fast Kaur athletes, it is a fun way to connect with the community and make new friends.

Here are a few scientific articles documenting the benefits of laughter yoga:

  • Even generally healthy and happy people face many stressors of life and need to be empowered with different tools in their arsenal to combat stress. Stress activates a cascade of biochemical reactions in the body that cause physical and mental health problems at any age. Scientific studies show that laughter yoga reduces levels of cortisol, which is an autonomic nervous system hormone that increases, even in healthy people, when they are under stress. This happens not just in older people or those with medical conditions but even in generally healthy young people.

  • Your favourite comedy show or your finniest friend may have you laughing out loud, but unless the laughter is sustained and accompanied by the right kind of breathing as in laughter yoga, natural laughter will not reduce your stress as effectively as laughter yoga. You need to sustain the laughter for 15 minutes or so and breath in the right way to provide enough oxygen to the brain and release carbon dioxide from your system to kick start the biochemical processes that produce the benefits of laughter yoga.

  • It is fabulous that you exercise regularly! You may not need to do laughter yoga if there is no stress in your life. But there may be times in your life when you are not able to play sport (e.g., due to an injury) or go to gym (e.g., during exam times or during super busy work schedule). During those times, it may still be possible for you to find breaks of 10-15 minutes to do laughter yoga to kill stress before it harms your body and mind. Consider empowering yourself with a variety of different techniques so you can outsmart stress even when your main go-to tool of exercise or sport is not available.

  • Laughter yoga will be conducted by Dr. Baljinder Kaur Sahdra, a world renowned expert of wellbeing, meditation, nonattachment, and compassion.

  • No, you do not need a yoga mat. The exercises are done standing up. If you are not able to stand up, you can also do them sitting on a chair.

We recommend you wear comfortable clothes and find a room where you would not be disturbing other people with loud laughter.
